40 Years of Field Research Stephen has researched active volcanoes around the world for more than 40 years. In 1994, Stephen began researching tidal influences on volcanic eruptions to help scientists better predict destructive events. Ever since, he has used his images and research to help educate people living near volcanoes and abroad about the dangers of volcanic events. His photos have appeared in the pages of National Geographic and Life magazines among others. He has also appeared in dozens of TV documentaries, ranging from National Geographic to Ripley's Believe It or Not.
Stephen was one of National Geographic ‘s expedition leaders and in 2001 was funded to investigate a correlation between the Moon’s tidal pull and volcanic activity.
