Stephen has authored or coauthored more than a dozen popular books on astronomy, including Night Skies Of Botswana (Penguin Random House; 2020), Mars (Reaktion Press; 2020), A Dictionary of Space Exploration (Oxford University Press; 3rd edition; 2018), and his acclaimed Deep-Sky Companion series (Cambridge University Press). Stephen’s scary science book — Are you Afraid Yet: The Science Behind Scary Stuff — was honored as one of the 2010 Young Adult Library Services Association Quick Picks for the Reluctant Young Adult Readers List. He also created and co-authored the young adult book Star-Gazing with Jack Horkheimer: Cosmic Comics for the Skywatcher.

Writer, Columnist & Editor
Stephen spent most of his career as an editor for Sky & Telescope magazine (1979 – 2007), monthly writer and consultant for Odyssey (science magazine for young readers; 1994-2008), and Associate Editor for GeminiFocus (quarterly magazine of the Gemini Observatory in Hawaii (2010 – 2020); He is now a columnist and contributing editor for Astronomy magazine (2007– present) and a contributing writer for Fifth Star Lab's award-winning Sky Guide  (2017 – present).
